Turn Down the Volume

When everyone is shouting, no one is listening. It’s all just noise.

James 1:19-20

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

We don’t have to always agree. Nor do we have to blindly accept or give approval to everything someone else is saying. People are free to disagree with each other. Often we should disagree with people. However, how we communicate in those disagreements matters. In a world where everyone’s voice is raised and their ears are closed, let’s choose to be different. Truth is not the least bit diminished when it is spoken with grace and love. Turn down the volume. Engage in healthy conversation. Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to be angry. You’ll find that words overflowing from a Christ-filled heart speak loudly even if said softly.

Proverbs 18:2

Fools find no pleasure in understanding
but delight in airing their own opinions.

Proverbs 18:13

To answer before listening—
    that is folly and shame.

In a shouting match, stop competing. The loudest voices aren’t always the ones that are right.
