What Light Reveals

When you turn on a light in a dark room, it reveals what was already there.

The dust was already there.
The clutter was already there.
The mess was already there.

The light didn’t create it; it only exposed it.

God’s Word works that way in our lives.

Sometimes we read Scripture and it makes us uncomfortable. It exposes a wrong attitude. It reveals sin we would rather keep hidden. His Word brings to light those things we would rather ignore. It may be pride we have excused, bitterness we have nursed, or disobedience we have tried to justify.

But God’s Word didn’t put those things there. It simply turned on the light.

That is part of God’s grace.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

God’s Word shines into our hearts, not to shame us, but to show us what needs to be surrendered. It reveals what’s already there and what shouldn’t remain there. Then, by His grace, it lights the path forward.

Most of us have experienced that moment when we walk through a dark room and think we can navigate it just fine.

We know the layout. We know where the furniture is. We’re sure we make it from one side to the other without much trouble. So instead of turning on the light, we just shuffle carefully and hope for the best.

That works great…until your big toe finds the corner of the bed. Or your bare foot finds the one Lego piece on the floor.

Then suddenly you realize the darkness did not make the room safer. It just made you less aware of what was waiting in it.

That is the danger of keeping things in the dark.

Many people would prefer the light stay off. If the light stays off, we don’t have to see the dust. We don’t have to deal with the clutter. We don’t have to admit there is a mess. We can convince ourselves that what we cannot see must not be that serious.

But ignorance isn’t the same as peace.

The dust is still there.
The clutter is still there.
The mess is still there.

And whether we acknowledge it or not, what remains hidden can still trip us, shape us, and harm us.

God’s Word turns on the light. Not to embarrass us, shame us, or make the mess worse. It shines so we can finally see what has been there all along and bring it before the Lord.

We do not need a faith that hides in the dark. We need a faith honest enough to let God turn on the light.

And once He shows us what is there, He also shows us how to walk through it. The same Word that exposes the mess also leads us toward mercy, repentance, obedience, and life.

So don’t hide from the light.

Open God’s Word. Let Him search your heart. Let Him show you what needs to change. Then follow where He leads.

The light may reveal the mess, but it can also lead us toward restoration.
