Jumping off the Hamster Wheel

"God put me on earth to accomplish certain things. Right now, I'm so far behind, I'll never die. " – Bill Watterson

For years, I had a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon poster on my office wall with that quote from the cartoon's creator. I related to those words. The more I checked off the list of to-dos, the more items were added to the list. The weight of all I wanted to accomplish piled up faster than I could unload what I had already done. It was discouraging to be unable to enjoy a job well done while knowing there were still so many jobs yet undone. Sometimes, life feels like we're on a hamster wheel, running and never getting anywhere.

Jump off the hamster wheel! God doesn't call us to endless and aimless running, but to simple steps of obedience, following Jesus. Do what He has called you to do today, faithfully work at that task, then leave the rest with Him until tomorrow. Give your work your best and then trust Him with the rest. At the end of each day, rather than saying, "I've got so much more to do tomorrow," find peace in saying, "I did the best with what He gave me to do today!"

The to-do list will still be there tomorrow, and many items will be unchecked when our time here concludes. It'll be okay. The world will keep turning because it isn't dependent on what we got done. You'll never get done all you want to, but each day as you live obediently, you'll get done all you need to.

"Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." Proverbs 16:3.
